Welcome to Santiam Buttes Farm! We are a family-run business, and have been in the Willamette Valley since 2016. The farm consists of John and Karol, and their daughters Rachele and Maggie. We have a lifetime of experience running small hobby farms, and have historically used our produce for our own family table or as donations to our local food bank. On our property, we value the lifestyle the farm provides, the closeness to nature, and the knowledge that we are producing healthy food in a sustainable manner.
In 2024, we joined the Oregon sugaring community and began producing bigleaf maple syrup! Santiam Buttes Farm is a member of the Oregon Maple Syrup Products Association, where we are able to network with other bigleaf maple syrup producers in the region, share knowledge with others, and explore the maple sugaring business. The conversation that got us started in the syrup business was comical - John had been describing his long list of projects, explaining to Rachele that he stayed very busy and always had too many things to do. Rachele asked if he had ever considered tapping his maple trees. John smiled, sighed, and hung his head, knowing that his daughter’s curiosity and passion meant he’d likely be helping with one more project, and a big one this time. However, after just one season of collecting sap from the trees on our property and producing maple syrup, we are absolutely hooked! We love the process, the realization of a valuable new agricultural product in western Oregon, and the community we have found in the blossoming bigleaf maple syrup business. We hope that after your first taste, you’ll be just as excited about bigleaf maple syrup as we are!
Additional projects on the farm (the ones that take up so much of John’s time!) include beekeeping, maintaining a small flock of Columbia sheep, keeping rabbits and chickens, gardening, entertaining our border collie, and many other tasks. We enjoy engaging in tasks the generations before us instilled in us, as well as learning new ways to make the best use of our land.
